Markha Valley Trek

This is one of the beautiful, most popular and very interesting trekking routes of Ladakh. This trek begins near Spituk gompa about 7 km. from Leh .This trek pass through high pasture land of Nimaling and two high passes ,Ganda La (4940m.) and Gongmaru La ( 5200m.).There you can explore the traditional Ladakhi villages, green markha valley, crumbling forts and ancient Buddhist monasteries.


1. Delhi – Leh: Early morning flight,Less than 2 hours.Airport pick up and Transferred To Hotel.Leh is the fascinating capital of Ladakh. Mountains Dominate the landscape around the Leh as it is at an altitude of 3,500m.to avoid Mountain sickness you need full day rest. Acclimatization is important before trekking.

2. Visit Leh & Monastries: Full day sightseeing covering famous Monastries of Indus Valley , such as Hemis Monastry,Thiksay Monastry ,Shay Palace and Main Bazar.

Day 3: Leh – Spituk – Zingchen: after breakfast drive to Spituk (3220m.) about 7 km. from Leh. 20 minutes drive, Trek starts in flat and desolate plane and after follows gorge Till Zingchen (3375m.), 2.30 - 3 hours of walk.

Day4: Zingchen – Yuruche or Yurutse (4100m.) 3 hours of walk. Follow the Zingchen stream towards Hemis National Park. The trail leads through a narrow gorge and as the Valley opens up, arrives at Rumbek (3800m.). Follow the stream and cross bridge in  less than an hour you will arrive at Yuruche (4100m.) below Ganda La pass .Just  Before the camp there is “Mani wall” .

Day 5: yuruche - Shingo (4100m.) via Ganda La pass (4940m.)5-6 hours of walk.Trail climbs up to Gonda La Steeply.pass offers beautiful views of Stock Mountaons to the east and Zanskar range to the west. After pass there is long descent till shingo village  (4100m.)about 3 hours of descent.

Day 6:Shingo – Skyu(3390m. about h hours of walk.Trail follows down to shingri Nala following  Spectacular Shingri gorge and there is a gompa on the top of cliff.Camp site is near  Hamlet.

Day 7: Skyu – Markha (3813m.) about 8 hours of walk. Easy but long day of trekking, ( 21km.) Trail turns south –west and follows markha River.after two and half hours  of walking you will arrive in Thinlespa Before Markha there is a ruined fort and Monastery on the way.Markha is largest village of Valley, camp is Just before village.

Day 8: Markha – Nimaling (4700m.) 6-7 hours of walk.Trail climbs steeply, Leads along the Chortens, crosses a  Stream.and reaches Hanker village (highest village in the  Valley) trail continues to High altitude Pasture Nimaling.

Day 9: Nimaling – Chogdo (3800m.)6 hours of walk.Trail is Zig Zag and climbs up, climbs steely to Gongmaru La  (5200m.)From the pass descend is also steep, rocky Gorge.camp side is near stream.

Day 10: Chogdo – sangsumdo (3650m.) – Karu -5-6 hours of walk. The last day of trek is very  Easy, walk down along the stream. In two hours you will reach Sangsumdo, Beautiful Camping place .Important Hemis Monastry is on the way.from where You can take jeep for Leh.An hour drive.

Day11:. Depart for Delhi by the morning flight. If you like Adventure travel, you can drive Manali or Srinagar (The road journey is covered in two days with an Over Night halt at Sarchu (which lies on the Leh-Manali high way) or Kargil (which lies on the Leh Srinagar High way).
